Once established, pines require very little supplemental watering. Water young plants and potted plants when the soil is barely moist 2 inches below the surface. Established plants may require additional water during periods of extended drought, especially when growing in areas that normally receive water. Prune to maintain shape. Cut back candles (new growth before needles begin to emerge) at least half-way to slow growth or to increase bushiness. When planting, allow large species enough room for growth. Pines often drop many needles annually. This is a natural process of growth, not a cause for concern.
